BUCKEYE
Within minutes of the internationally renowned cultural institutions in University Circle, great shopping and cinema at Shaker Square, and top quality health care at the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center and University Hospitals, Buckeye is the neighborhood of choice for those who want a diverse selection of housing in a convenient location, with everything from luxury to value. The Buckeye Area Development Corporation and New Village Corporation/Neighborhood Progress, Inc., are redeveloping the former St. Luke’s health center campus into a $70 million, 28-acre development that will include 85 new single-family homes and townhouses. The development will include the new state-of-the-art Harvey Rice K-8 school, and will have its own branch of the Cleveland Public Library. The most successful CitiRama ever, showcase of custom-built homes, is also featured here. Plans call for the original hospital building to be converted into 200,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial and residential space, including housing for the elderly. On model blocks adjacent to St. Luke’s, the development corporation is helping homeowners fix up their properties.
Two blocks away, the corporation is renovating the historic Moreland Theater into a banquet and concert hall. Nearby will be Artisan Square, nine live/work townhouses with ground-floor retail space connected to modern living quarters upstairs, complete with rooftop terraces and panoramic views of the city. “It’s a great opportunity for artists, architects and other creative people,” says John Hopkins executive director for Buckeye Area Development Corporation.
